RHI 03 - Surrey Urban Mission Society

Rapid housing initiative 3 (RHI 03) will provide urgently needed permanent housing for 60 residents operated by Surrey Urban Mission Society which 'began as a community kitchen in 1995', and since then has provided community support and housing for persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Surrey. The project is developed in partnership with the City of Surrey and BC Housing. The project will be built with a modular construction method to deliver a robust sustainable and age friendly building with an accelerated timeline.

...built with a modular construction method to deliver a robust, sustainable and age friendly building with an accelerated timeframe.

The interior is light and airy with all spaces daylit with views out to the surrounding context.

The main floor has a variety of spaces including a full service dining room, media and multi-purpose room, medical room, staff offices. Modules are combined to create wide open spaces that can be partitioned as needed. The street frontage is articulated with a wood lattice screen along with planting, outdoor spaces, and street furniture to create a friendly interface to the surrounding community.

Knowing that the baby-boomers make up a large cohort of the homeless population age friendly design principles are incorporated. Where the stardard units are designed to be adaptable along with 2 fully accessible units per floor. These units are carefully layed out within a standard module size.
